Leadership Institute 2009- Process Overview
We are pleased that you are applying for the Saint Paul Public Schools Leadership Institute for Aspiring Leaders.  Described below is the process for screening, interviewing, and selecting candidates for the Leadership Institute.  Please read the directions carefully and be sure to return all required materials, including the on-line application at the Human Resource website.  For more information, please call Jim Eaton, at 651-744-1305 or e-mail at james.eaton@spps.org .

Step 1 - Application

The application deadline is Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. 

Every participant is required to submit a completed application on-line, by following the HR website instructions. The 'Leadership Institute' position is listed under the administrative job category.

In addition to completing the application on-line, you must also submit (or have submitted on your behalf) the following in hard copy, to the address below:

  • Copy of a valid Minnesota principal’s license or proof of eligibility for a Minnesota principal license; or a letter from your supervisor confirming your role as a leader in a non-licensed management/administrative position with SPPS.
  • Writing sample:  In narrative form, please respond to the essay prompt, "Why I should be selected for the Leadership Institute for Aspiring Leaders." This is not a research question.  Your writing sample should not exceed 1,000 words.
  • three letters of reference (in support of your candidacy for the Saint Paul Public Schools Leadership Institute), including one from your current supervisor, that address:
    • your demonstration of leadership in recent past
    • his/her belief in your leadership potential
    • and your strengths demonstrated from the SPPS Leadership Model.

Please Note: Letters of reference should be submitted in sealed envelopes.  Letters may be submitted directly by your reference.

Step 2 - Screening

Each application will be carefully reviewed and analyzed for content and completion by a three-person screening committee. To review the evaluation rubric, follow this link: evaluation rubric 

Step 3 - Interviewing

We anticipate inviting approximately 35 candidates for face-to-face-interviews with a team of experienced professionals who are familiar with the challenges of being a school principal.

Step 4 - Selection

Final selections for participation in the Leadership Institute for Aspiring Leaders will be based on application analysis and the interview results. Candidates will be notified of their status by the beginning of April.

Those selected to participate from the Saint Paul Public Schools will be charged $250 for the cost of the books, printed materials and other supplies. Participants from other school districts will be charged $1,500 for the first week of professional development.

Selection is not a guarantee of placement in an administrative position. 

Selected participants must commit to attend all sessions.

Institute 2009 Dates
Phase 1: June 15-18 at Gainey
Phase 2: June 22-25 and July 20-23
Phase 3: Eight half-day sessions throughout the 2009-10 school year
